Hello, I Just finished a rebuild on a 302 and was looking on what transmission I should use. A lot of people are saying AOD But someone is offering me a FMX transmission for a cheap price. Reading about the FMX, it says there are a lot of issues and I should avoid it. I currently have a C4 sitting in my yard however, I don't know what year it came from(the 302 is a late 80's) Can anyone offer some advice? Im planning on it being a cruiser and not a race car, and also looking for reliability though im staying with a Carb(for now).
Problem with my C4 is that the bolt pattern is weird and looks like it's from an older car. I have not updated my build in a while but you can see what im working with here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...olt-plate.html
I have a 400 with an FMX but it is going to come out in the future. I don't have a problem with it as it was in the truck when I bought it but I have a 302 and an aod so will put that in. My FMX is a heavy transmission I don't know if all were cast but mine is. The FMX has been around as it is the original Ford O Matic ( I have been told.) I don't know if they bolt up to a 302 I do know that some mustangs have them.
This link may help Id your C4. I'm sorry I only have a minute rite now, but if you google how to ID my c4 there is quite a bit of information.C4 Identification and Selection By for now.
I myself am going to use an AOD because of the ability to use a lower rear end ratio and still have good highway manners , but if you are not planning on a lot of long distance or run low rear gears then it doesn't really matter . I would use what ever you can make work
Hey Guapisimo,
We've got a 351W with an AOD in our '50. You get a good cruiser with this combination -
overdrive is nice for highway driving. It's kind of a pain to set up the cable & get it right but
once it's all set up it works fine.
The next generation transmission would be an AODE which requires a
little computerized box to set it up. I think you'd be happy with either of these 2 transmissions.
How did you fix the roof on your truck? Our member in Asturias Spain, Capelo, had a '56 with the
same problem & he incorporated a fiberglass replacement roof. His looks fantastic. You may want to
contact him to discuss (in Spanish preferably).
