All,
I am new to the site so bear with me. I have a 1996 Bronco.
5.8 Liter V8
Auto Locking Hubs.
I had the hubs replaced a while back by the dealer.
I want to put new rotors on, but I cannot get the Hub nut off. I cannot find the right tool. The hub nut looks like it requires six pin socket that has an inner diameter or 68 mm. I went to the local ford parts dealer and he said it comes off by removing the snap ring. THere is no snap ring. Please help.
i think pep boys sells the tool you want. its a very large speial socket to remove/tighten the large star nut inside the hub assembly. there may be a snap ring in there somewhere as well. check autozone, aid auto, etc as they may have it as well
there should be 2 snap rings in there one around the iner edge of the hub(the steel part not the part you unbolt) about oh say 1/8" in usualy you cant see it cuzz of the crud that builds up around it then the other one should be rite at the end of the axle itself if you cant see the one on the axle yet than you still have the iner hub left that is removed by takin the out the outer snapring hope i didnt confuse ya ive ben told i do that alot lol
I'm doing the same thing on my '88. There are two different sockets, one with 6 and one with 4 prongs, mine uses the one with 4 only. Autozone rents/loans the one with 6, but I had to buy the 4, it cost $18. I managed to get the C-ring off with a screwdriver with out doing much damage, definately try to clean it out first and check out the diagrams in the manuals. I was able to get all the nuts and retainers off, I think, but my wheels/hubs still won't budge so I'll probably need a puller to free it up. Good luck.
The link didn't post right. Look for a post rotor replacement? on 10-04-4004 in this forum. I have a '96 and the photos in the post are exactly like mine. Those snap rings are difficult to get at and get out.
