Replacing exhaust check valve

Help!!The exhaust/air pump check valve broke away from the air tube. I have a '96 with the 5.0 engine. How much trouble is it to replace the valve? It looks like a *itc* to reach. I really want to get this fixed--exhaust smell in the truck is bad.

If its the one near the back of the engine that runs into the metal air tube it may be a PITA to get out of the air tube. I ended up heating the tube in a vice to get the lower half of the one that broke on mine out. That one is the only one that I know of that is not threaded onto any of the air injection pipes. I could be wrong about thiat since some emissions stuf changed in 96 from previous years.

Thanks Greystreak for the response. The AIR check valve is threaded onto the AIR crossover pipe at the back of the engine and it is a "PITA" to get at. We broke the threaded nut right off the pipe, so now we have to replace the pipe and the check valve, something I was hoping not to do. For future info, there is a wrench hex under the valve nut that can be used to prevent what happened to us. Unfortunately, you can't see things very well back there near the firewall--it's a grope job to get at. There's not much room to work either. Thanks again.

Tell me about it! I ran around for months unable to find my exhaust leak until I relaized that check valve had been blown in half. Sorry for the misinformation. I thought you were referring to the one that is in line down to the cats. Fact of the matter is, all of the check valves are a PITA.

Yep, this one was in half, too. It took a month, and getting it up on a lift, to finally find it. Of course the parts are Ford parts--the valve you replaced is available at any parts stores. Thanks again.
