Hi,

I have a 2006 F350 Dually 4X4 with locking hubs and the ball joints are bad. I have a question. I have the rotor off and the locking hub out. I cannot get the actual hub off. There is a snap ring recessed inside the hub that holds the hub/axle together. I cannot find anything to release the snap ring. I've tried a whole set of snap ring pliers, needle nose, etc and nothing works. Any suggestions? Looks to me like you have to release this snap ring, unbolt the hub, remove the steering knuckle, press out and in the ball joints all while leaving the axle shaft in. Another possiblilty I thought about was leaving the stubborn snap ring and removing the axle and hub in one unit. But I can't get the axle released.

I believe the procedure is to pull the axle and hub before removing the snap ring. Some where in this forum is a topic with a nice looking tutorial.

 

I was able to remove the snap ring, I had pliers with exchangeable heads so I just turned them so they bent in a way that I could have the plies in the hub area better, came right out. Pretty sure need to have that snap ring out to be able to get the axle out and I think I also had the axles out to do my ball joints, its been a while though so I can't remember for sure.

 

Yep, I miss read the post, I thought he was talking about snap rings under the ball joints.
