Howdy Again! I want to fix some rust spots over the rear wheels before it gets too cold out to work. Wondering if someone knows about a good rust treatment/ neutralizer/ primer type chem once I get the loose paint off? Also, does anyone know about fender trim, metal or plastic, I could install to cover-up any sloppy work I'll probably do. Thanks!
That Permatex Extend works pretty well (Home Depot). I use the spray can version. Just wire brush off as much rust as you can then spray on the Extend and let it dry. It'll turn dark after it's dried, then spray on some primer and paint color of your choice. Should last a good long time. I don't know about fender flares, but JC Whitney should have a bunch to choose from.
I'm with Greystreak, POR-15 is the shizzle. Just do an internet search on POR-15 you'll se many great rust treatment products.
Maybe a little pricey though.

Taking the rust off w/ wire brush I found a new problem. The rust came through the fender in a couple of small spots. What can I use to fill these? Should I get the rust off, treat, prime, then fill and finish? I mentioned in a previous post that I'm from Arizona and have never had to deal with rust before. This groud is a very valuable and knowledgeable resource for me. I really appreciate all your suggestions. Thanks!
Once the rust is completely removed, you can fill the holes with typical body filler but you run the risk of it falling out years down the road. I personally like the idea of lead-filling them but its a more difficult process and not practiced by very many people but the really expensive pros.
You can place a small peice of metal under the fender and rivet it in place then bondo the hole. If you never used bondo mix alittle at a time, thin coats. Wear latex gloves to.Get auto shop special drill bits, it has a point on each end. This is only a temp. fix. I redo it every year to pass state inspection in Maine..
Speaking from experience, Bondo will not hold to air. In other words, it is not good to sue it to cover holes, as it has nothing to adhere to but air. The only surefire way to fix it is to cut out the affected area and weld in new metal. I have used a strip of the thin metal tape on the backside of the panel and then used the Bondo. That may last up to a year or so. If the rust is near the edge, you can cut it away and install the cut-out type fender flares. If you're still determined to used Bondo ,at least get the fiberglass-reinforced version, as it will be a little stronger. My rust hole in the tailgate was repaired using the old lead technique, but it's hard to find someone who knows how to do it.
I have used POR-15 on many projects and even on my basketball pole. It is amazing stuff. I am not sure how it works the way that it does. but it really works. I get it from POR-15 store. They get the stuff out quick and the offer free shipping on orders over $100.
I use Rust Mort available at body shop supplies....spray or wipe it on and let it dry....it turns the rust black and may require 2-3 treatments if the rust is bad....then wash it off, and prep for filler or primer....I know that eastwood's stuff and POR15 are good too, but havent tried them yet....
