lots of rust.

I just got my 79 f250 and there is a lot of rust on her. I took off the bed and tanks and cut out all of the rusty floor sections i ordered new cab mounts too. My question is that to clean the frame im using a grinder to get the flaking rust off of it. I also have to repair one section of the frame where its actually rusted through. I cannot sandblast the frame but im going to put a body lift on the truck and hopefully that will give my some extra room for the grinder. what do you all think about this? Also is it good to use undercoat to coat the frame or would u all paint it? Lastly I heard that there is a paint that neutralizes the rust can i use this to paint it after grinding and leave it this way? ( sorry for the long post)

lots of rust.

Hi Screamin - Welcome to FTE & the Bodywork forum.

Best thing I can tell you to start is to do a "Search" of this forum for a product called "POR-15". Be sure to change the search to include old posts also. You'll find a lot of useful info that way.

And yes, I'm a firm believer in the stuff. Undercoating alone will not solve your problem.

After you've gone thru the posts, come on back and let us know what you think or ask about anything else we can help with.

lots of rust.

POR-15 is pretty good stuff, I used it on my frame as well. Grinding is acceptable for prepping; just remember that a wire brush on the grinder is not advised since it actually closes the pores or the metal interfering with adhesion.

Depending on how high your jacking it... remember is not UV friendly unless it is top coated.

Good luck!

lots of rust.

One other thing, be sure to wear latex or rubber gloves if your using POR because it has to be worn off if not gotten off immediately.
