I have a 92 escort that I will be re-painting soon. Sorry about posting on a car in a truck forum, but nobody else can answer my question. Short of cutting out the panel and replacing it, how can I remove and neutralize rust on the rear quarter panels? I will be doing all the body work myself along with some help from a guy I know that does bodywork. I will probably take the car into maaco and have it painted. From what I hear, if you do the prep and bodywork yourself, the maaco paint job looks nice. What do you think?
Sandblasting is the best way to clean it up. If you don't have access to one or don't have the dollars to pay a shop to do it, you'll have to hand sand the area to get it as clean as you can. Then wash it real well.
Is it rust holes or just surface rust?
If it's just surface rust, do a search for a product called Ospho on this forum. It's a rust converter that you can get at home depot.
If it's a hole or holes, you'll have to either weld a patch in, glue a patch on or replace the panel. If you need to weld it, there's an excellent thread at the top of this forum on how to weld a patch panel. As for gluing, again, look through the forum because it has been discussed before and I'm not familure with the process.
As for Maaco, I've never used them, but there's been much discussion about them in this forum and I think the Appearance forum.
