Not gonna bother to upgrade my vid card for Doom3, but UT2003 is very good with the Nvidia card I have now.

Yes, the suggestion to install Win98 on a separate partition is a very good idea. Try it, I've had a few friends do it to play some of their games, and it works fine for them.

Did any of you guys play Shadow Warrior? It was basically the same as Duke 3D.

wolfenstein was a great game too. Similar to doom, just a different plot basically. I like the original Duke nukem, the scrolling version, haven't played that ina looooong time though.

Got to www.3drealms.com. They released the source code a while back and a number of individuals created a Windoes port.

Yeah I used to play that game too. I still have it around here somewhere. Great game! "You no mess with Lo ****!"

Too bad we couldn't play Duke3D over the internet.....I would kick Mike W's butt! I too have the Atomic Edition!

I wish they'd made a hardware acceleration patch for Duke 3d when they did Shadow Warrior. I never did understand Mr. Broussard's priorities sometimes. I have GLDoom 0.94e (Bruce Lewis' lost project) and it looks good with 6x AA and full aniso in 1600x1200. Marine Doom works with it too.

You know what DNF stands for in racing parlance...lemme guess, George saw Doom 3 and HL2 alpha and decided to update the engine AGAIN...maybe he'll get black-flagged if he waits too long...

They might as well release the source to DNF! At least it would get done!

One of the first graphic games I really got into was Wolfenstein...the Apple II version...id's version made me go get a Soundblaster for the ol' 386...

Here's something hardcore oldies will really like (and the kids will shake their heads at wondering how we managed to live without PS2 or Xbox): MAME! All the good old coin-op ROMs, not much overhead required for the 8-bit emulator either...

I think Duke 3d can be made to work with XP (I have a few multiboot boxes and I use '98SE mostly for gaming when I have the time to kill, W2k SP4 most of the time, and XP when I have to, we won't talk about Linux and gaming in the same sentence, please...). Try running it as a Win98-compatible app and manually allocating memory resources? I suspect the thing it misses most is protected-mode calls to the sound hardware. There's a neat little bit of software that allows the sound to work with a bunch of DOS and DOS-based protected-mode games and 32-bit only kernels thru an emulation layer. It's called VDM Sound, and here's the project page: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/
so if you've gotten as far as it puking with a "no sound hardware available" message, this may help. Next time I'm in W2k or XP, I'll try making Atomic Edition work (I have to "steal" it off a spare box first, as I lost the CD years ago after compressing the contents to hard drive), and if it does, I'll tell y'all how I did it...

While I'm there, I'll see if it could be made to work over a WAN without too much tinkering. Works fine on a LAN. I'd love to watch someone's butt get kicked old-school style, while I'm shrinking and stomping some boo-tay myself!... I ain't too fossilized for this yet!

Well, even if you are still looking for newer versions of first-person games, there are TONS out there. I wonder if Rise of the Triad would work on XP? You could get FarCry, Doom III, any of the Half Life games, Quake 2 and 3, UnReal, and lots o' others.

The only one's I've dealt with are Doom III and Quake 2. They both work on XP.
