Rotten eggs?

It seems like everytime I park my truck and get out it smells like Rotten eggs, or some bad emissions. Anyone have this problem?

I had this for the first 1000 miles or so and it just stoped. I think it was a break in thing. All is good now with 3500 miles.

Rotten eggs is a sign of sulfur. If you have high sulfur gas that might be the problem. Try filling up with a brand and see if the smell goes away.

This sulfur smell used to be a typical emission from the catalytic converter. I used to smell it all the time from new cars. Nowadays it's probably not as noticeable but might still be around in certain cases as you can testify.

I was just about to start a thread on this. I now have 7700 miles on the truck, and for the past week or so I've been driving around, smelling sulfur. I actually thought that its been a bad week for following cars with bad cats, but I noticed just the other day that it is my truck making the smell - very strong when just parked.

Bad catalytic converter will give you the sulfur smell

other than the smell, does a bad cat do any damage to the vehicle?

Probably not, but you wont pass the smog check next year.

Luckily, the emissions system has to be designed, and is waranteed for 100,000 miles. And no, you won't find that written anywhere.

Go talk to your dealer, they should put a new cat converter in.

My car with 200,000 miles makes that kind of rotten egg smell, but that's because the cat converter was rusted through.

Just wondering if any of you who had the rotten egg smell have had it fixed. I've had this smell for quite a while. Dealer installed a new throttle position sensor to fix problem. Not sure what throttle position sensor has to do with rotten egg smell from exhaust. Seemed to fix problem but now the smell is back and it seems stronger. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's the converter. Put a new one in, replace, the smell will be gone!!
Been there, did it.

Still got the rotten egg smell. Took to another dealer, said to try filling gas at another station. Still stinks. Need to take it back in to dealer. One problem. I have since put on an aftermarket cat-back exhaust. Worried about dealer voiding warranty on exhaust because of this. Opinions?

Have not replaced converter yet. Last trip to dealer they said to try gas from a different station. Have you had this done? Is there some kind of test the dealer can do to see if it is actually a bad catalytic converter?

Before you panic, gas can make a good converter stink.
The dealer has it right, change stations.
If it keeps going, then you can worry. The old bean style converters would start reeking of sulfer as they broke down. The new much more advanced ones usually don't do that.

I think you just got some 'skunky' gas, worse than skunky beer.

If it still stinks two tanks from now, you got a beef. And you will also have some codes showing up on the dash.

Don't lose any sleep in the meantime.
Chris
