Hey Everyone,
I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4x2 Regular Cab.
Two days ago my Amber ABS Light came on when I started my truck and remained lit. I drove down the block and and also noticed that my speedometer will not read anything until I hit 50mph, At which time it reads correctly. I haven't driven the truck much since for fear of the brakes going out on it. Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.
--I have replaced all the fuses assoicated with the ABS System as per the owners manual, and have had no change--
Your symptoms are consistent with a failed VSS. It's located on top of the rear end, costs around $20, and can be installed in about 10 minutes. The VSS is used by the speedometer, cruise, RABS/ABS, and the computer.
According to my Haynes manual my year Ranger doesn't have a VSS only 1997 and earlier models. Could the rear wheel speed sensor cause the same thing?? If so where is this component located and what is an approximate cost?? Thanks for the replies!! Hope to have this fixed this weekend so please let me no whay you guys think.
If that isn't enough info, the use the search function in the Ranger forum. It's a common problem that has been addressed and you should be able to find detailed instructions on how to correct the problem.
