My insurance company offers a break in my rate if I have ABS. They claim that, based on my VIN, I do not have ABS. I have a light that comes on when I start the truck that says ABS. Is my 98 F-150 lacking ABS, is it 2 wheel ABS or is it all wheel ABS?
There is nothing in the VIN that says whether it has rear or 4 wheel ABS unless they have access to a database, such as what your dealer's part's department has, that shows what the vehicle was equipped with but that seems pretty unlikely to me.
All 1998 F-150s have ABS. Some have rear wheel ABS and some have 4 wheel.
On the tag on the door there is a tab that says BRK. If it has a 3 there you have 4 wheel ABS, if it has a 4 you have 2 wheel.
You can also look and see if you have any wires running to behind the front wheel. No wires means you just have rear wheel ABS. if you have wires going behind the front wheels you have 4 wheel.
If you have rear wheel ABS is that good enough for them to give you a discount?
Thanks for the informed reply. Regarding the tag on the door, in the BRK tab, I have a B?? As for crawling under the truck, there are no wires to the caliper, so it looks like 2 wheel ABS. I think the insurance requires 4 wheel for the break in rate. Thanks again for the info.
My 97 F-150 4x4 had only 2 wheel ABS too and all I can say is it sucked!!
I live up in Minnesota and we get about 90 inchs of snow here a year. If you hid the brakes a little to hard on a snow/icey covered road the front wheels would lock up and if you were in a turn it wasnt to fun. And you could not pump them as the back two with Abs were unless then. Then if you hit a dry spot in the road you would come to an instant stop.
Thats all, just glad to have 4 wheel Abs now, as I am tried of taking out stop sgins. lol
