99 ranger - Not shifting

I have a 99 Ranger. 2 Wheel drive, 4 cylinder, automatic.

Yesterday it stopped shifting all together, (if I shift into 2nd manually with the column it goes just fine)

My speedometer also stopped working, my ABS light is on, my check engine light is on, and my O/D off light flashes on and off when it feels like it.

Sounds like a speed sensor.

I have read posts on this forum and I am in a bit of confusion.

1) One post says the speed sensor is on the transmission housing.

2) Another post says it is on the back end of the drive shaft between the rear wheels.

3) Yet another post says it could be some sort of wiring box below my driver side seat.

Can anyone give me any advice here? Thanks a whole lot =).

As I indicated in the other thread, it's on the rear differential. That's the thing that looks like a pumkin in between the two rear wheels. The driveshaft bolts up to the rear differential.

I have a 99 with 43,000 and the same thing happened to me 9/25/04. Thought it would be another $500. trip to the dealer. I checked out the Forums and found the fix. Glad this site is here. Replaced the speed sensor,"all better". Wonder if this is a common problem?

Smile How to replace speed sensor?

Hi. I have a 99 Ranger XLT 3.0 flex fuel 2x4 that is experiencing the same problems as described in the first post exactly.

Can someone point me to some info on the procedure to change the speed sensor? I'm pretty mechancally inclined, but I've never had to do any work on this vehilce since I bought it new, other than changing fluids and filters and plugs, etc...

Can you get the speed sensor from somewhere like AutoZone or would it be a dealership only type of part? Is it *in* the rear end or just mounted on? Would I get any help from a haynes-type book?

You can get it at the parts store.

If you look at the top of the rear you'll see it threaded in, just disconnect the electrical and screw it out.

Thanks for the quick response! I was able to find it and remove it to clean the connections, etc... I've check all the fuses and reassembled, but no change

Next stop - parts house for a new one. Thanks again!

Just wanted to say thanks for having this forum available. I bought the speed sensor at the Ford dealership's parts dept for about $25 and installed it today.

The truck shifts like glass! Everything started working again and the brakes actually seem to feel better as well, though that may just be me .

Thanks again for such a great resource! I always like when I can fix major symptoms for $25 and 10 mins of work!!!

I had the same problem on my '99 and went to my friends at FTE for help. When I purchased the part I asked the parts guy if this is a common problem. He said, "We sell a lot of them".

So did mine. I asked him a few more things related and he didn't seem to want to talk much more about it. Seemed to be gagged.

You'd think they'd at least send out a letter to the registered owners to let us know the whole truck hasn't gone to crap just because of a $25 part! I thought the tranny would jerk the truck off the road it was shifting so hard. Could really damage someone's vehicle, ya know? They could do this for people in the parking lot in 5 mins!
