Hey Strokster,

You are getting pretty good at this hot roddin' stuff! I'm impressed. 'Course bein' a Chevy guy, ya probably get alot of experience solvin' problems!

BTW, it took me a minute to figure out what SOTP meant. I did they same thing on my 511. I kept advancing the timing waiting for it to start laboring or kicking back against the starter, but it never did. When I put the light on it I was at 36 initial. When I would try to rev her she would just miss and catch to beat hell. Right now I've got it set at 20/38 and it seems to be happy. The next time I get it good and warm I'm gonna use the vacuum gauge to determine where it likes the initial to be set, then adjust the stop bushing accordingly. While I have the gauge on it I need to get the right power valve too. It's currently got a 2.5 so I would know that it wasn't open at idle, but it's too small and is causing a lean condition in the in the lower rpms when I accelerate. Hopefully I'll get all this done by spring.

I've got the MSD pro billet, AL6, 8.5mm wires. My engine is a 390... RV cam I believe (installed when I bought the truck), holley 670, headman headers, flowmaster delta 40, dual 2.5" exhaust...

I played with the timming: initial and advanced. I ended up using 10DBTDC initial, put the lightest springs (fastest advance) and the smallest stop bushing (most advance) which gives me about 28 degrees (38 total). It runs like a champ! I'm able to peel out in first, chirp in second, and fly in third.

I agree with EgoMan:

Isnt your cam a little radical to be having a good idle? maybe in the pursuit of a good idle you are giving too much and its not where it needs to be for the upper revs...I dont know that much about it though.I just think that with a cam that large i would expect to have poor idle.

I would set initial to 10DBTDC and go from there.

Just my $0.02.

What's that they say? "Even a blind hog finds an acorn". I'm not a "Chevy" guy, just a creature of habit. When something works ya stay with it. Soooo, I've had the same little ole small block Chevelle spanking all comers (ok so the ones I choose) since 1978.

My latest victim... 67 mustang, 428 super cobra jet, dual quad, top loader with 4.10s... good friend of mine...just can't seem to find enough traction to spank the "mild" small block I'm running now. I'd never go from a roll, I was riding shot gun when a supercharged late model mustang tried him. All I can say is that car was wicked, scary fast, and I still can't believe I ever got the better of him.

And just to let ya all know, I do still have a ford truck so I am worthy of posting here. It is a 1950 F1 with a Y-block.

Now be nice. We want Strokster to come back!

Whe you consider driver ability, and vehicle traction, I believe a SBC could walk a 428SCJ. I mean, if the guy doesn't have traction....what's he going to do?

Ayway, this was my whiny thread about my pathetic 428 stroker and my MSD issues...

I think I'm getting closer....maybe I'll make it to the track tonight.....I just spent most of the evening helping my buddy put a turbo in a Miata :-) We still have a lot of work to do.....it will be a miracle if he gets to go....

Sorry if that got under your skin but it's the truth. In fact I've walked away 3 times to date. I gave him one when we were fender to fender at 110 running out of road and he drifted in my lane forcing me dangerously close to the dirt. He hooked that day and I could not pull away... too close to call but the second I lifted he was gone like shot from a cannon.

Oh and BTW, the man can drive. He's had his car as long as I have...that's why we are close friends.

Just remember before throwing the BS flag...I've had this car since 1978 and have been dialing it in day by day. And the "mild" small block ran 11.40s in a Camaro be for seeing daily driver duty in my Chevelle.

Anyone on any given day is vulnerable. Sometimes you just get a guy's number and theres nothing that he can do.

I agree that on paper this is a no contest. But drag races happen on Asphalt not paper.

I hope that sheds a little light on the subject. I am only here to learn and follow some of the build-ups. And occassionaly drop a little smack for my ole' buddy Scouder....perhaps I'll do that in private so as to avoid offending anyone else.

-sigh-

The 429 was the SCJ, the 428 was the cobra jet.

There was also a 428 SCJ. It had lemans rods and the added pie weight behind the balancer. The added weight was needed to balance the extra weight of rods. Those Lemans rods are HEAVY! Very HEAVY, I know I have a set in my '69 F100 428CJ.

All right, I give... I'll go to the source and find out exactly what engine it is. Perhaps I can get some pictures too. 427, 428, CJ, SCJ....It's big, it's bad, and it runs like a stripped a$$ ape. Scary fast. And in a 67 fast back that is essentially gutted it is quite a ride!!!

Back to the real subject at hand. Greg, if the weather holds, I'll try to make it out to SAR. I'd love to see and hear your truck in person. I emaled you my cell number, call me if you make it out.
