I'm in the process of mounting a 5" Autometer Tach on the dash of my '79 F350 4x4 and want to know how others have done this. I think the base that the dashpad is formed around is steel. So, do most people mount theirs by just using metal screws into the dash or thru bolt it and use washers on the backside. Obviously metal screws are going to be much quicker but I want to make sure it is solidly mounted and don't know if the metal screw route is adequate or not on these dashes. Love to hear from anyone who has done this before...
When I installed an Autometer tack on the top of my dash of my 1978 F150 I drilled a hole through the pad and metal dash and installed the bracket with a bolt, lock washer and nut. Removal of the instrument cluster makes it easy. I didn't use screws in case the vibrations from the road trips or subwoofer worked them loose. Also if I ever have to reach my hands back in behind the instrument cluster that's one less sharp screw to tear my hands up on.
I mounted my 5" monster tach to the A piller with one sheet metal screw, looks like it's sitting on the dash. It's also out of my vision path while driving but still easy to glance at when needed.
