I have the same project in mind; taking the old cluster out and installing an oak instrument mounting plate, sort of like the one dad made for our ski-boat. Should be a few months down the road and I'll post pix on my web site for you all...
i think it would be sweet, but i dont know what i am getting my self into. I will look through the posts a bit more. I would have searched, but with the upgrades going on, i thought i would just post.
i am thinking of ideas to do when i do the full resto on my truck. thanks for the insights.
I would not waste money on a set of AutoMeter Gauges.
I made the mistake of buying a complete set for my '55. At about 1/2 tank, the fuel gauge would swing peg to peg as you drove down the road. When I asked AutoMeter, Jeep Worthen said "it was more accurate that way."
He said I could send in the old one and they would dampen it. So, I guess I just use a stick to check the level in the mean time? So they send me a gauge and I send the old one back. Then they send me another (the same?) gauge back. So I sent that one back with a note explaining the problem. Six months or so later, I get a terse note saying they accidently sent me a gauge and I had better send it back pronto. So I wrote them a bit more terse reply, dropped it in a non-combustable envolope, and sent it back. Never heard another word.
The trip meter on the speedometer periodically turns over 200 miles instead of 100 miles. Gee I could have had Stewart Warner, VDO, Isspro for hte same money.
Scot,
Thanks for the info on your headaches with the Auto Meter gauges. I have been planning on installing a set of Auto Meters in place of the stock console in my 78 F-250 Supercab. I was wondering, what series of Auto Meter gauges did you buy?

i was thinking about replacing the volt, oil pressure, and coolant temp gauges with aftermarket ones, and leaving the fuel and speedo there, but i'm not sure if i'll have to make a new instrument cluster or modify the old one, ryan
