1998 Ford Explorer XLT Overheating

On a rainy day it happened, Temp Gauge going to red line. Added Coolant but still overheating. Could it be the thermostat or something else? If it is the thermostat, can somebody show me where is it located. Please help! Thanks!

Couple of questions... do you have the 6 or 8 cylinder motor? What does the temp gauge do? Does it continue to climb until it overheats, or does it fluctuate back and forth. Does it continue to loose coolant? One of the easiest repairs is the thermostat, and it is part of normal maintenance, so that is where I'd start, unless there is something obvious like a fan, hose, or serpentine belt problem. The thermostat is located at the end of the upper radiator hose on the engine size.

Like marragtop sez change the T-stat. Ford does'nt seem to use the best quality T-stats, thats why i've been getting mine at the Toyota dealer. Between my Ranger & Taurus i've done around 450K miles on Toyota T-stats with no more problems.
