My truck overheated yesterday so i put a new thermostat in drove it and that seemed to fix everything. Drove it all morning everything was swell, shut it down and let it sit for about four in hours in 20 below weather. Let it warm back up for about twenty minutes and then left. Made it about eight miles down the highway at 55mph and it overheated. Is it possible that the new thermostat is no good or that it froze closed.
I filled the radiator after i put new thermo in and that is all. It should be real close to 50/50 on the mixture. Do you know of any way to check the water pump
you need to check the level again. you must have air in the heads causing pump to cavitate. top it off and try again. to check pump just start it after it is warmed up watch the flow in the radiator. the level should drop a little when you give it gas.
If it's -20 below, it's possible without enough anti-freeze, the rad/lower hose could have froze up while driving..........I'v had it happen. Buy a tester, they are like two dollars.
If that does not work do you have any other suggestions or ideas on what could possible be causing the overheating. i believe that i have a very small pin hole in the top of the radiator could that cause anything.
Youreally need to test the antifreeze, sou said earlier hat it is going to be 45 below in a few days 50 50 is good for 34 below if I'm not mistaken.
What thermostat did you buy.
Chech the antifreeze jug you are buying many places now sell 5050 antifreeze so it is half water already.
mix it 70-30, anything more than that you start going the other way. Also, If you don't already, get a weather front on it in those temps!!
P.S. in my opinion buying pre-mixed anitfreeze is like throwing money out the window. Around here they sell 50/50 for 8.99 and 100% for 9.99............hmmmmm, which is a better value.
yes tonight is supposed to be 29 below with 40-50 below wind chill. My radiator is supposed to hold 27 quarts, almost 7 gallons so i used 3.5 gallons antifreeze and the rest water. The first time it overheated it boiled out quit a bit and i topped it off with 50/50. the thermo that i bought was supposed to be a 190 degree that was an OEM replacement.
I agree on throwing your money away with the 50/50. Our prices here are the exact same. i bought 100% and mixed it and then had a 50/50 laying in the garage that i topped it off with. i have it plugged in, a tarp over it and a heater under it so it won't freeze up tonight since i cannot get it in a garage.
ok, well keep in mind, that by draining the radiator, you only get out about 50% percent of the total coolant, bottom line is...........test your coolant. If its test good down to -40 then go from there.
