I have a 99 f-150 SC 4x4 with approx 78000 miles. over the past couple of weeks, I have been experiencing problems with the power windows. It started off with the fuse blowing just though it was an old fuse. then started having trouble with the passenger side window. I can put the window up from the drivers side control only, but it still works normally from the passenger side. I put up the $90 for the new drivers side control from the dealer and it seemed to fix it, but then it started doing the same thing again. I have tried a number of ideas that I have gotten from here, but I am still unable to figure it out. does anyone have a good wiring diagram for that year? or is there any suggestions? can describe the steps in checking voltage at various locations? etc...
I had a problem like that with my 99. Could never make it happen when I wanted to trouble shoot in the garage but drive to the bank and the window would blow the fuse right away, and it was always the fuse under the hood too. I ended up pulling the switch out and washing it down with WD-40 and never blew a fuse since and that was over a year ago.
This may get confusing...feel free to ask if you need anything clarified
Even though the window works ok from the right (passenger's side) switch you could still have a problem with it. The left (driver's side) switch sends a ground signal to the right side window motor through the right side switch. When you press the down button on the left switch it grounds the white/yellow wire to the right switch and from there the ground goes to the motor on the yellow/red wire. If you remove the right switch and ground the white/yellow wire that would do the same as pressing the down button on the left switch but it would bypass the wiring in between the switches. That way you should know if the problem is in the right switch or the wiring between the 2 switches. If it's a wiring problem I would open up the harness between the left door and the body (inside the rubber cover) and see if there is a broken wire in there.
OK, I performed checks per you idea, but i still am not able to figure what's going on. I disconnected the passenger side switch, then used a jumper plugged into the harness at the wht/yel wire and grounded it. nothing happened. I pulled both doors apart to inspect the wiring and did not find anything. I was not able to trace the wires beyond the jamb due to them dissappearing into the upper part of the dash. Oh I even sprung for the passenger side switch as well today and installed it. Just wanted to see if you might have any other thoughts before I just bend over and take it to the shop.....???
ok went back and retraced the white/yellow wire. it does appear that there is a problem with it, just cannot find it. does the wire go nonstop to the passenger side to the drivers side? caould it ba abandoned, and a new wire run in it's place?
The white/yellow wire goes nonstop from the left to right side switches so yes you could just run a new wire. Before I would permanently run a new wire I would just overlay it to try it.
