I'm getting a very severe push to the right in my truck. I just got it, and it didn't do it when I got it. When I hit the brakes, the truck wants to push hard to the right. I also have a pretty good squeak in them, too. Any ideas? Maybe my left brake pad is shot or something? Or the right is sticking...or clamping harder.
Maybe a caliper slide sticking? Also what year and make? It might be a proportioning valve malfunction. One other thing. Is the squeal constant, or just when you hit the brakes? If it is constant, you might have a stuck caliper or slide. If not, I would look to the proportioning valve.
I would pull the calipers off and clean the slides real well and re-grease them. They can cause your brakes to pull and drag. A bad proportioning valve or collapsing brake hoses can cause similar symptoms. Check this thread:
When you pull the calipers, check the pad wear. As you probably know, most newer pads have "tweeters" on them, (a small piece of metal on the side of the pad that contacts the disk when the pad wears) which can cause the squeal you are describing. Of course, pads worn to the point of metal-metal contact will cause a squeal or a grinding sound, so check pad wear on both sides.
I'm going to take it into a tire/brake place after I get home from my trip to California - don't want to deplete my funds completely before hand.
I hope its not too much, hopefully just needs the calipers regreased or whatever. I'd like to not have to pay for new calipers and all that junk. Don't know when the pads were changed last though...
..I'd rather have my pads grind without the "tweeter" thing, personally. I HATE squeaks on my vehicles.
Grease or oil on the linings (bad seal) would cause it to pull to the side with the problem. Check your backing plates for weepage. While you're under there, look everything over to be sure nothing is out of place.
