Has anyone heard of/seen/done power steering using an electrically powerd pump? I have a 50 F-1 that I really want to put a flathead into. I dont think an engine driven pump could be done without making the engine bay look really cobbled together. I know that the 88 Pontiac Fiero and(I think) the Toyota MR2 used an electro hydraulic pump mounted away from the engine. This is the setup that I would like to do.
Some of you guys will think it is a lot of hassle, or I should just go with a different engine, but I like to do things that are out of the ordinary.
Any input?
I have seen this used on a show car or two, for the looks, & a racing application where the owner was trying to free up hp by eliminating eng. driven accessories. Waste of time & overly complex, for his purposes. For what you want it will probably work well, if you can get enough pressure out of the Fiero system. It used a rack & pinion & considerably smaller/lighter wheels & tires. Not sure how well it would work with a stock setup/straight axle & a ram(if that's what you had in mind).
Just tossing out an idea- if you are using one of the stock transmissions with a PTO output, you might be able to modify it to drive a PS pump. Guess this all depends on your intended combination. Good luck!
I hope this suggestion may be worth your time: go to www.engineersedge.com and www.Pirate4X4.com as they both have articles, threads, suggestions, formulae, and driveline information for a project such as you are considering.
It seems to me that homespun91's idea of a transmission-driven PTO source of power for your steering has a good bit of merit.
I do hope the websites I put in this post will be of some measure of helpfulness to you!
Good luck!!
It looks like the Fiero pumps are in VERY limited supply. I was thinking of using an integral power steer box like I've seen on some other threads (Toyota).
I have a 67 Mustang with the ram assist system which works OK but it would be nice to eliminate all the hoses, valve, etc.
Try http://www.classicperform.com/ and see if that's what you're looking for--Scroll to the bottom of their page there's an electric/hydraulic power steering pump for (ouch) $500. I know it's gonna be cluttered, but I'm gonna try to put a regular pump on my F-1's flathead.
I am trying to find a bracket to mount a Saginaw power steering pump on my 49 F-1 Flathead . I have the pump and have converted to rack an pinion, but can not find bracket. Help, thanks in advance, countryrat2, crd8505@att.net
You aren't likely to find a factory bracket for a flathead. Very few of the cars with flatheads had PS, but they did exist. The brackets won't likely work with a Saginaw pump without modifications, so You're best off making your own. Here's some previous threads on the subject:
Hey Mike,
We've got a 2005 Malibu Maxx my son drives that has electronic steering - there should be tons of those out there. I'm not sure if it's the type of setup you are looking for but it might work.
Ben, those are integral to the column and are purely electric with computer controls to modulate effort. Plus, I had an '06 Saturn with that and it lost a gear (plastic of course), cost under warranty $1200... just for the parts. They said it was a common enough problem they were thinking it would end up a recall.
