rearend help

I have a 2002 Screw with the 5.4L. I have been trying to figure out which gears i have so i looked on the sticker in the door. it has these #'s (i guess these are the important ones).

R Ax Tr
5 19 U

If someone can translate this it would be extremely helpfull. Also i was wondering if it was open or limited slip (i'm pretty sure it's an open differential since i leave one black strip). Thanks again.

Aggie'07- all the information I have found says that code 19 is a 3.55, open diff.
I have a very similar question as well. I have an 02 Screw with 4.6. My code says H9 which is 3.55, LS. HOWEVER, two guys I work with also have Screws (one an 03 and one an 01, I believe). One of them says H9, the other says 19. My diff physically LOOKS like the one that says 19, even though my sticker says H9. I'm beginning to wonder if I have the factory installed axle or if its been changed (truck was bought slightly used so I don't know).

Of the 2 previously mentioned co-workers, the one with LS (H9), his diff case is a little longer on the right hand side (as viewed from the back), whereas the Code 19 truck diff case appears a little smaller and fairly symetrical (which is what mine looks like). Does anybody know what I'm talkin about here and have pictures or a link to pictures to help me figure out what I really have? I'm going to be very if the axle is wrong. BTW, I have not yet taken time to crawl under the truck and read whatever codes are stamped on the axle- I'm sure this could provide more info.

It sounds to me like one axle is the 9.75" and the other is the 8.8". I don't know for sure when Ford went to the 9.75" in half ton trucks, but I know for a fact it was later than 1997.

You can find out if you have an LS axle by jacking both wheels off the ground. Put the tranny in neutral, and spin one wheel. If the other wheel spins the same way, it's LS. Opposite direction, open differential.

If you put it in park, you won't be able to spin the rear wheels by hand at all.

There are no differences in outward appearance to limited slip and open axles. The difference lies inside.

If they appear different, that is because they are completely different axles, but that makes no difference as to being limited slip or not.

OK. I crawled under my truck and read the axle tag. Several numbers but the one I was interested in at the time was 3L55. A quick search of the net confirmed what I figured- the L stands for limited slip and, of course, it is a 3.55. So at least my truck does have what it's supposed to.

So this leads me to another question- Comparing an 02 Screw and 03 Screw, both with 4.6, both with axle code H9 on the door sticker- If the axles look different, then does this mean that one is a different size (not ratio) than the other? I guess the H9 code doesn't tell you all the relevent info. Am I seeing what andym was talking about- that maybe mine is an 8.8" and the 03 is a 9.75". (And if this is the case, what does that mean to me in terms of using the truck, towing, etc.) I'm sure there are resources available to fill my lack of understanding, so feel free to point me toward them.

thanks,
Mike
