I have a 1994 f150 xl, 4.9L, 4x2, m5od. every week or so I will notice that my power steering is unusually loud. I open up my hood to add fluid and found that the cover for the reservoir has blown open, it didn't twist itself open, it blew out on one side, taking force to dislodge it. I refill the fluid and it works fine for another one to two weeks, and the same problem again. Any idea what is causing this?
That is some good information to know! Thanks, I'm definitely going to stop doing that haha. So now that I know about the why it does that could you elaborate on how it causes it?
I asked a friend at work who used to work for Ford, and he said something about not having a bypass through from the reservoir to the pressure side of the steering gearbox (I didn't fully follow what he was saying). Turning the wheel forces fluid from the steering gear up through the return line to the reservoir and instead of the steering gear pulling fluid from the reservoir, it overfills and blows the lid.
