Broken Valve Springs

My F150 just pulled up lame with a broken valve spring....got 90k on the bugger and luckily have a 100,000 extended warrenty which I'm gonna get some value out of...

Was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem (broken spring), what the results were (did the repair work or lead to more tragedy?) and any hints on the repare (ie replace all 4 springs on the side affected). Thanks.

H Wayne and welcome

What size engine do you have?
I haven't seen broken valve springs on a newer engine.
Most of the time warranty will only pay to replace whatever part is broken. They might not pay to replace all the springs. If the job is done correctly by a skilled tech you shouldn't have more problems down the road because of it.

It's a 2001 5.4L v8, 89K on it...supposedly they are replacing the spring and the heads too...estimate at $2,400 in repairs from dealer. It's gone off to insurance adjuster to get approval (so they can find some way for me to pay for it).

I'm concerned because I read in a ford diesel chatroom about guys getting this, followed by the next spring, or worse more springs on the other side of the engine. Just wanted to see what other Ford guys have had happen to them.

I wonder, since the head is off, should I MAKE them replace the other 3 springs?

Thanks.

If they replace the head the new one will probably be a complete head with all new valves and springs.

Gottcha...and thanks...I'd guess $2,400 ought to cover it...now the 64$ question is, what to look for in the repair...what I mean is, what's the probability something in the cylinders/block has also failed? That is what parts dropped down there and churned away? Of course I will not know, but any good questions to ask? What about a compression test, or is that automatic with this kinda repair...

When they have the head off they will notice if any other damage was done such as a dent in a piston from a dropped valve etc. If the valve didn't drop it probably didn't do any damage so you wont have anything to worry about.
