i have an 05 f150 that quit while driving, towed it home n started it up but was running rough n noisy in the front of motor. figured it jumped time n i would put a new timing set in and phasers. upon removal of passengers side valve cover i found 1 rocker out, 1 broken and 1 off the valve spring with a bad roller. the keepers were off the valve and the valve is in the cylinder. timing chain is very loose and there is a broken piece down in towards crank sprocket. did the timing jump cause 3 rockers to be damaged n 1 broken valve all in one cylinder. havent removed the drivers side.
was looking for parts to repair and they seem to not be many options out there for the 3 valve motor.
It definitely jumped if it is loose and toasted all your rockers like that. You can check where TDC is vs the valve position by hand cranking the motor.
Pull the timing cover(easy with the valve covers off.) You will probably see the timing chain guides broken.
The head need to come off also a this point, at least the one that dropped the valve.
Its wise to pull both, check the valves on both heads, have them ground, new guide seals etc.
Reassemble with all new timing components
it has 200,000 on the truck. i dont know what kind of oil n filters that were used for sure. i just bought the truck as it is fairly cheap to fix n drive. the guy i got it from was very up front on telling me what it did when it quit. he said he only used royal purple oil not sure what he said for filter. but that has only been for 70,000 miles that he has owned the truck.
i think i need more than just the head repaired. i cant imagine a whole valve laying on top of the piston did it any good.
thinking i need to find a good used motor and do the timing chain n phasers along with plugs. i see the used ones i have found are kinda pricey.
still going to pull the motor and see what all damage is there.
any body know of a good source for engines n parts
Now that you mention it, if you dropped a valve it may have damaged the pistons
Bought my engine for my 07 from powertrain products in Maryland a month ago.
3500 bucks with a 4 year unlimited mileage warranty.
Napa sells the same engine
Remaned in mexico.
it is awesome. superquiet. Runs excellent . Machine work looked great
Heads were both machined for cam bearings and had them installed.
They are also using the newer melling Hi vol oil pump
Sounds like a new one would be your best option.
