There are many, many methods of hunting, and what may be perfectly acceptable to some is downright appalling to others. Cavemen used to herd animals up and drive them over cliffs - crude, but effective. Some only hunt with single shots, or iron sights, or recurves, or some other affectation to "preserve the purity" of the sport. While nothing is wrong with any of these endeavors, if they are coupled with disdain for, or ridicule of other methods, it amounts to elitism.
Hunting is the purposeful killing of animals. If humans are to be respected, they must respect the dignity of the lives they take.
Although I realize that not everyone can or should hunt, on a personal level I believe it makes me more honest as a human being if I partake first hand in at least some of the harvesting of the food which I eat. To remove myself from the process, to isolate myself from the life/death cycle is, in my opinion, disrespectful of the lives of the animals I consume.
Why dont you plant something that could be useful for both deer and yourself, ie. alfalfa. Plant a field of Alfalfa, see if it attracts deer(around here they love it), then when seasons over mow it down and bale it up and sell it as alfalfa hay. If the deer eat it all, you might not get hay but you got your deer, so your winning either way, money from hay or a deer or two. Agree with all of yall about feeder hunting, its really common here in texas. I was set up on a feeder once and walked out of the blind and started stalking around, didnt see any deer that day it was wet and rainy and it was a litlle too warm. Ended up shooting a hog though!
I tried deer cocane once and had no luck with it. As far as baiting goes it all depends on the area you are in. It is legal to bait here in Jersey. Where I hunt, the pinebarrens, there are lots of deer. But they are spread out over thousands of miles of big woods area. I know alot of areas have oak flats, hardwood bottoms, agriculture, etc. Not everybody has that luxury. We have pine trees. Out here the woods are very thick and offer the deer lots of cover to hide in until dark.cIf you can see 50 yards thats alot. But even if you can see 50 yards you may only be able to take an ethical shot out to 20-25 yards (bow, muzzleloader, or shotgun, no rifles allowed here). The soil out here is basically loose sand (pineBARRENs) so planting anything is very difficult. Now I'm not arguing for or against baiting, I'm just saying the hunting tactics that work wonderfully by one person may not work by another. Pesonally the most action I ever saw in the woods was under some white oaks dropping acorns, not by a bait pile.
Well I have used all the methods listed to take deer. I don't use one exclusively though. When I do bait, I don't put out much...at most two gallons at a time (that is all that is legal in WI) and even before that law came into effect I never put out anymore than that. Even then, the stands that I do feed will usually at most get feed every other day.
Lots of times when the weather is not so nice and still hunting hasn't proven up you will find me in a large elevated box stand that has a nice little propane stove going, windows and room to move around....and yes it has a small feed pile on the other side of the food plot that it over looks about 110 yards away. I have taken several nice bucks out of it when the weather would have made other methods of hunting undesirable.
Then again the two biggest bucks that I ever took were not taken within a mile of any baits, food plots or agricultural plots. Both were taken on the ground still hunting and both were less than 25 yards away. One with the bow and one with a rifle.
How you hunt is up to you, as long as you are following all applicable laws AND making every reasonable effort to retrieve downed game and minimizing the loss of game by not taking marginal shots.
