Deer Cane

Deer Hunters do any of you ever use this stuff. We have our food plots with different things in them and we put out corn feeders, and we use alot of peanutbutter. But I thought I would try the deer cocane to bring in more deer to my stand. but I have been getting mixed feed back on this stuff.

No Flame intended here but if you are hunting why would you bait and shoot. Deer are at there most plentiful now then at any time in the past ever. There are more deer in the USA than anywhere else. I can see setting up near a corn field or clover but to hunt near a bait pile defies the word hunting itself. Any ways deer eat a lot of things but deer cocaine is B/S stuff. Find a well used intersecting trail(s) with fresh sign, poop, tracks rubs, scrape and setup in a tree or blind nearby and have at it. I really don't mean to flame you but please rethink your hunting ways and i guaranty you will feel much more gratification when the days hunt ends and you are dragging out your 12 point "HUNTING".

Thumbs up

For some reason some states allow bait hunting...you can see the adds for feeders and all kinds of weird stuff in Cabella's. It's totally illegal to bait game animals in Mt.

I am not saying its not legal i just don't understand why a true hunter would venture to hunt a bait pile. The whole concept is to hunt not wait for a animal to come feed at a setup feeder or bait pile where a shot can be directed straight at the animal leaving it little chance of escaping. Now i can see a food plot maybe 2-5 acres with clover, corn etc.. or more which allows the approaching animal to come out in a different place instead of a 10 yard area where its not even fair. I am not flaming redneckbronco nor am i saying he should not do as he pleases living here in the USA allows us all to do just that with (legal bait piles) and such. I am just miffed as to why when there is so much more to gain through the hunt itself than any bait pile could ever muster up. Either way bro good luck.

Some folks hunt for the shear reasoning of needing the meat. I personally don't care for bait hunting either, but each state has it's reasons for allowing such. I mainly hunt just to see them any more. My wife wouldn't put Bambi in her mouth if she was starving to death. So if I happen across something worth taking, I donate it to where I work, except for the backstrap and a couple roasts.

I agree with you that when there is a need to hunt for food you do what it takes. But for the novice hunter or pro hunter stalking is real hunting. You got to smell like em, see like em, move like em.

I know this is off topic of the thread but I agree with you archer1. Buddy of mine has a 1500 acre game ranch outside of Barksdale, TX. A guy was hired to manage it and had all his buddies come over and hunted out all the whitetail bucks. Anyways, the doe:buck ratio was 6:1. His pops allowed us to come in and basically slaughter all doe we saw. Took 36 with three guys in three days. His ranch is in hill country and is the type of ranch some guy will pay $2000 to sit in a stand and shoot the first thing he sees come to the feeder when the deer hear it go off. I HATED EVERYTHING ABOUT HUNTING A FEEDER. Not my way of doing it. Like you said, MY OPINION is that the best way to hunt it is to track it.
As far as the deer cane I couldn't say. Never used it, never will, and do not know anyone that does. JUST MY 2 cents. Everyone has different methods, means, and opinions.

We could start another thread where we could detail some of our favorite "stalks". I have a ton of stories from hunting down by the river bottoms with a slug gun. (It was near town, thats why the slug gun.) I'd rather leave this thread for those who use the means of hunting this thread was started about. I'm sure there are reasons his state allows that type of game control. No point in creating hard feelings or making the guy feel like he's being attacked for doing something thats perfectly legal in his area.

I am not attacking him or the way he hunts and i certainly hope he does not take offense at my posts or others. I think it may be a great idea to start a thread about stalking stories and we could share some rare experiences.

Hey guys no hard feelings here everyone is entitled to their own opinion that is what is so great about USA. Now back to the point I don’t really consider this baiting for two reasons. It provides extra nutrients for the deer. Second believe it or not but our land is just not over run with deer. Because of the other landowners around us doing this same type of thing I am just trying up the deer traffic across our land. We have food plots with clover, soybeans, rape, and other types of greens. But my stand location is in thick timber and under brush. So a food plot is not easily done. And I figured hunters hunt near a food plot where deer feed so I thought I could hunt near a feeder where the deer feed. I can’t think of a hunter I know that don’t hunt near a feeder. And as far as stalking I could stalk with the best of them, but where I hunt now is only 40 acres and with 3 to 4 hunters on it it’s kinda hard to go roaming around in the woods. I also like to rattle and grunt call, the way I see is just like you said what ever it takes to bring home the horns. But like I say guys there are no hard feelings. Thanks for the replies and good luck on your hunt.

Exclamation what about this

I have a question for archer1: You have such a problem with people who bait, but do you use any kind of buck lure, decoys or do any kind of rattling while you are hunting?Awhile ago I was watching Ted Nugent and he was asked about baiting deer and his words were anyone who will sit up in a tree, use doe estrous and then try and rattle in a buck but doesn’t believe in baiting a deer is a piece of Admin note: see our guidelines about language Because it is the same thing as sitting over a pile of bait!!!!!!!!

I have used Deer Cane, and other products like that, to increase the traffic in the areas that I have hunted. Sorry, but not every where is completely over populated with deer. In most states, you can't kill a doe, and I have spent seasons where that is all I saw, day in, day out. So I have taken a salt block, (ie Deer cocaine) put it close to a trail, to increase the likely hood of a Buck coming out in the open. There is a much better way to bait them in than deer cane though. If you take a rope hang it over a limb, tie a burlap sack to the rope, put some salt blocks in them. When it rains, the salt will drip onto the ground (its better if a rock is under it) and the deer will come and follow the salt.

Now, don't get me wrong, I won't put my stand directly around that spot where the bait is. I will usually find the trail that runs through there, and hunt off of it somewhere down the line.

Baiting is only proper in two instances in my opinion.

1. If there are no bucks, or deer period coming through your land.

2. If your trying to get them to come close to your house.

The second only works if you live out in the country though. My dad does that.

It is very easy to hunt though with some natural resources around. Find a pond they drink off of. Find a corn field they are crossing, Find a percimin (spelling is probably wrong there) that they feed off of.

Deer cane, or salt blocks, both work, I've seen them work.

I've tryed both ways. I don't like baiting because it makes the deer feed at night fast after the rifle season starts. I can see bait in places like north La because most of the hardwood forest is gone & replaced with pine. Even if I had feeders on my land I would hunt the trails at least 200 yards away from a feeder. I prefer food plots. They attract & feed more game species. I've used the deer cane too. I had a spot wher I put it that the deer ate a hole in the ground 1 ft deep & about 6x8 ft square. I killed several good deer on the trails around the deer cain. I didn't hunt where I could see the spot. I don't feel right setting over bait.

I have used Deer cocaine on a couple different lease properties, And like lariat97 said, I've had and also watched deer dig holes in the ground tyring to get to the cocaine.
I have also had spots where deer completely ignore the cocaine the hole hunting season. ???????????
What i can recommend is the HUNTER SPECIALTYS scent wafers, they come in all different scents and you can take them with you when you change spots, and they will last you the hole season. HAPPY HUNTING.... >>----------->
