my starter or solenoid just went out today. tried to turn the engine over and it clicked like it was trying to grab, then tried again and it just whirred.
is this my starter or the solenoid. the solenoid is only a month old(replaced it because it looked old and was cheap) and the starter has about 9,000 miles on it. if someone can give me some advice tonite it would sure help.
The "whirr" sound that you hear is likely only the starter motor spinning without the bendix kicking out the gear to engage the flywheel.
The solenoid is just an electromagnet of sorts and only makes clicking sounds, not "whirr".
AL.
If the whir noise is the starter, then your bendix or gear assembly on the starter is probably bad. It has a one-way clutch bearing in it so the starter can turn the engine, but the engine can't turn the starter. They go out sometimes.
Bad Bendix, If your engine backfires or locks up from fluid lock some times it breaks it when trying to start it.
Just go get the parts to rebuild it, all the "Parts" Bushings front and rear, Bendix, Brushes, and solenoid cap. Make sure you sand the armature down and under cut it about a 1/16" between the windinds where the brushes seat.
i dont want to get the autozone starter, but they are the only ones open. it's only going to cost me 30 dollars, so if it lasts a year i'll be happy with it. by the way, i do have some run-on, so that may be what broke the bendix.
thanks for the help guys!
what are the good brands? i would rather buy two than put one in on a cold night on the roadside.
it was the bendix, it was completely obliterated. i had to clean out chunks of it from the bellhousing. where do the chunks i couldnt reach fall to? are they going to damage my flywheel?
muffinman, my new starter didnt come with shims and none came off with the old one. if there were any shims on the bellhousing they stayed right where they were. i hope its in position; it seems to start perfectly now.
