So I have a 78 F250 custom 4.9 300 inline six manual transmission. The problem is when I try to start it the starter solenoid rapidly clicks, and thats it. I replaced the old starter because it crapped out yesterday.
So im 70% sure its not a bad starter.
I've tried 3 batteries just to be extra sure, and nothing changes. I hooked up jumper cables from my buddies pickup and grounded bypassed the solenoid by just touching the starter cable, and all i got was sparks.
The engine isnt seized either because we roll started it and the thing ran just fine. So besides it's gotta be the battery man, or bad starter the answer im running into most often is bad cable connections.
Im just a little doubtful considering i bypassed most the cables by putting jumper cable right on the starter cable from the solenoid. Im leaning towards maybe the starter isn't grounding right. Im just checking to see if anyone else has any thoughts on this. Something else i should be checking. Thanks for your time.
Probably close to 95% of electrical gremlins can be traced to bad grounds. And when old cables go bad it often isnt apparent just looking at them.It costs nothing to remove cables and clean grounds.

Exactamundo!!
Make sure your solenoid has a good ground to the inner fender.
And did you know there are two different type starters for the inline 6 - the nose is longer on one. Get the parts guy to bring out both of them and have a peek.
