I'm looking for tips from anyone who has removed the floor stick shift on a 4 speed shifter. My Ford manual says to remove the shift boot and then depress and rotate the cap counter clockwise. I can't seem to get the cap to depress or rotate. The previous owner cut the shifter and then re-threaded it to accept a shift **** with large threads. I want to go back to original and have a replacement original shifter.
Those can be a real pain. Sometimes they just come off the way the book says, sometimes it takes two guys. One to depress the other to turn. Just keep trying. It does need to depress quite a ways. 3/16 to a 1/4 inch maybe. If yours' is not depressing at all, there may be some gunk in there fowling up the works. Every time I take one off I think about making a tool to drpress and turn. Try a little wd40 or other light lube in there to loosen it up. Good luck! Steve in Boise
I"ve been down that road and here is what I did. I made a "u" shaped block of wood out of a piece of 2x4 that was long enough to fit between the lever retainer and a bottle jack that I placed between the wood and the under side of the dash. I protected the dash with a piece of rubber. A little leverage from the jack and the retainer will depress so that you can turn it. The block and the jack are a handfull and a second pair of hands would be usefull but I was able to do it by myself. Kind of backyardish but it works great. Good luck, Lazy
All good suggestions, but still no luck. I'm in the process of rigging something like lazy hog farmer suggested. Thanks to all and I'll keep you updated. It is the NP tranny and not a big enough issue to drop the tranny.
I was able to get the old shifter out quite easily last night. I enlisted a second pair of hands and was able to depress the retainer with two large screw drivers with small pieces of rubber on the tips to protect the cap. A good shot of PB Blaster loosened up the cap and it came off right away. Thanks to all who helped. That is what makes this site work.
