Engine ID
I have a 460 engine that I traded for about 10 years ago & it has been in my shop covered. It was running when removed but smoked a little. Note it wasn't in the orginal truck. I have been thanking about rebuilding it & what I would like to know is how could I find out more information about this engine. ie, year, what it was in, etc. Any help would be welcome.

look for some castings numbers for a year. The first letter is a decade like c is 60's, d is 70's, e is 80's. The next thing is a number which indicates the year of the decade. Then there is a letter telling what it was in. Find a list of these, and the last letter is more stuff. After that they are worthless.
Example D2TE-9025 is 1972 truck engine! These castings are not always up correct so look for several and compare. The intake, heads, carb, dizzy, block will most likely have them somewhere! THe reason you have to compare them is ford might make a mold and use that casting for 2 or 3 years since it fits, works, etc.
