i purchased a used 1992 ford e150 a couple of years ago. I was told by the original owner that the engine had been replaced.
PROBLEM:
very eratic spark from the coil. sparking about once every eight engine revolutions or so.... (I did try replacing the coil with a brand new coil and that caused *no* change) Being that the van is a '92, i went to a local auto parts dealer and purchased a replacement 'control module'. Ford refers to this module as a TFI (Thin Film Ignition) module.
After having had no luck in locating the existing TFI module, I went to a local Ford dealer's part department and asked them where the module was located at. The dealership went as far as printing out a hard copy of where the TFI module is located at, which clearly displays that it is mounted on the side of the distributor. However, that is *not* the case.....
QUESTION:
being that the engine had been replaced, is it possible that the engine was replaced with a differnt year engine that would have the TFI or control module located somewhere else??????
If so, what other locations has Ford used????
another question, is it possible to identify some where on the engine block what year the engine is?
Ford moved the location of the TFI around the early 90's. Heat was a big killer to TFI on the distributor. Try looking on the firewall on the drivers side, to the right of the master cylinder.
