I'm considering the purchase of a 390 motor that has been run primarily on propane for the past thirty years.
What effects does the propane have on internal engine parts? Do the parts wear the same as would be expected with gasoline? Does propane burn hotter or cooler than gasoline? And finally, what would happen if I began running it on gasoline again after all these years?
I'm not sure about the wear of the engine parts or the heat but the propane burns a lot cleaner there should be little or no carbon build up in the engine. to run it on gasoline again all you have to do is take a plate off from under the carburetor and hook a fuel line up.
The propane will wear out an engine faster than will a liquid fuel, The liquid fuel will tend to lubricate the cylinder. Gasoline is a lot better fuel. THe power advantages and safety concerns should pay for the conversion.
I purchased a motor which ran on propane its entire life; the motor was in fact very clean for having over 100,000 miles. Only thing I had to do was change the carburetor and install a fuel pump.
