Basic motor rebuild kit?
Basic motor rebuild kit?
I have a '79 f150 w/a 460. it burns oil, and has ~251k on it. i'd like to rebuild it, but i just want to rebuild it to stock specs, so i'm looking for a kit with gaskets, seals, bearings, and rings mostly, i'll worry about my updated cams and intake and whatnot later, i'm mostly just trying to get an idea of how much this project is going to cost. thanks
Call autozone and ask they have stocker rebilds for decent prices. For the kit alone is gonna be in the $500 range. Pluse head work ($100-$400) and a little block work ($100-$200). This is assuming you take the heads and block to the machine shop to have the maching done, you can save money and do some of the maching yourself but it takes skill and practice.
paw performance
pistons, pins, piston rings, con rods, main bearings, stock or performance cam ----> $304
summit or jegs offers re-ring kits but you have to call to get a price.
Whats the odds that a 250,000 mile block won't need to be bored out or crank turned?
Machinist pricing varies greatly from state to state, you need to contact a local engine builder / machinist to get estimates.

Only one way to know....tear it down and either get the right tools to measure the crank and bores, and have a good understanding of what your looking at/ for when inspecting the engine or take it to a machinist / engine builder. Don't order any thing until your positive of what is needed....if you wanna get the kit yourself the machinist will tell you sizes of bearings and rings/pistons to get. Stock heads will work, but with the miles, it would be a good time to have them rebuild, the springs/guides/seals have got to be worn. Good luck
Edelbrocks are not cheap. Do not get them for a stock build unless your going high pefromeance which means bigger cam, intake, etc. You have to choose what you want, you just dont thorw a edel head onto a completely stock motor wont run right it is designed to work with other hipo parts. Edels will set you back about $1300 for the set.

Remain kit (Napa #Kit RM342P) - Includes premium rings, bearings, full gasket kit (including head gaskets), assembly lube, rod bolt covers, small package of RTV - avail in any oversize or std = 224
Piston (Napa #CEP 2241856) 21.49each = 171.92
So for $395.92 you have all the parts to assemble the shortblock.
Keep in mind you will have to have the machine work done as mentioned.
If your lucky (like I was on my sisters car with 280K miles) you can get away with just buying all the parts listed (including pistons) and just run a ridge reamer and bottle brush hone in the cylinders and reassemble. It's a cheap overhaul but works fine as long as the bores don't have too much taper or out of round. I had the crank polished for $25 and pistons fitted for $45.
