Here's the thing, somebody loaded SBC Internet on one of my pc's this weekend via a cd that came in the mail (we had it shipped to us... not the "free 1000 hrs" crud), anyways, we had been using AOL (yayaya... I know it stinks) and thought we'd give SBC a try. After loading it, we tried to get on the www and everything is now loading EXTREMELY slow. Not the computer, it's fine, but the internet connection. So slow in fact, that AOL now tells me that "request has taken too long and has been canceled" and that's just me trying to check my email, it wont even come to this website. So I uninstalled SBC, hoping to cure this... nope. I have reinstalled/reuninstalled SBC and same thing. It's almost like the modem is just not wanting to connect. The computer is reconizing the modem, so I believe that's on the up, but what else could it be? Perhaps reinstall the modem drivers?
Come on everybody! I need some help! (I know you're still out here fn250... help me out) Thanks
This is what I did after I got my SBC disk. If dial-up.....write down the phone number SBC is using to connect. Go into Explorer and initiate a connection using IE. Use the same phone number.....make sure you connect all fine and dandy. Go in and uninstall the SBC software. Run much faster, load faster, and no SBC crap on your PC. Can still use SBC Yahoo for your home page or whatever if you like......you just loose all the silly crap youwont use after a week or so anyway.
Aol.......I refuse to pay dial up prices that rival broadband. Stick with the $9.99/mo. SBC. You can still use AOL Messenger without AOL as you ISP.
First restart, then make sure your modem driver is installed. Uninstall SBC, make sure all temporary files are gone (C:\Program Files\SBC...) or anything that is starting up with your pc when booting. Go to device manager and make sure that the modem is working properly.
It would be very helpful in knowing what operating system you are using. Well in that case, are you on dial up or do you have a cable modem? If it is an external cable modem, turn off the PC, and unplug the modem, wait at least 30 sec and plug it back in and then restart the computer. Any other error messages or anything?
To create an IE dial-up, goto the Internet Options. Click on the Connections tab and from there its self-explanatory. I use earthlink (ya, i know 21/month sux for dial-up) and i use that IE dial-up method instead of their bulky software.
Absolutly its legal. This is actually how Microsoft intended it to be used way back when. Your still using the Internet Servie Provider(ISP) you pay every month. Your just using your Internet Explorer(IE) to directly make the connection instead of having silly ISP software start you IE window for you, while their stuff just takes up room.
If the slowness problem persists, your registry settings could've been messed with. You can downlad a program called Cablenut http://www.cablenut.com/ which can restore the settings. You can also reinstall the TCP/IP protocol and see if that fixes the problem.
Yea, if it still runs slow...............try some things to clean it up of evil nasties. Ad-Aware Spybot
Both these programs are very helpful. But if you decide on just one, I'd do the Ad-Aware.
A programmer told me, in this case, the free stuff is the best stuff.
How about going to make new network connection and setting it all up through that, phone #, username and password etc. Easier than going through IE, also i'd quit using IE and get Mozilla Firefox, more stable, quicker, and less attacks against it. The only need for IE 6 is G-mail.
