My E250 6 cylinder automatic starts to vibrate at about 55 mph. It seams like the body rather than the engine is vibrating. Right now the inside of the van is empty, I am converting it to a camper. Any Ideas on the vibrations?
the wheels / tires are new. no shimmy on front end when I drive. I thought that the driveshaft would make is vibrate even at slow speeds. I will check it anyway. Thanks for the info.
I had a diff act like that. Vibration came in hard at 60, and smoothed out at 70. When in doubt replace the cheapest, and easiest part. Keep the diff in mind, just in case the easy fixes don't work. I had my driveshaft balanced, and checked for run out..new universals put on. That helped alot. Eventually put in a used diff with low miles, that finally fixed it.
Vibration problems will drive you to drink.
Even though the tires are new, they can still be out of balance. They only balance them at ~25mph.. This can cause problems above about 50mph... It's a complicated process, but it works. If the shops balancer is out of spec it will not balance well.
Even new tires can have separations. My daughter's car had symptoms like you describe. I told her to look carefully at all the tires for bumps on the sidewalls. She didn't see any, so she took it to Les Schwab, where they did find a separation which wasn't visible but which was causing the vibration. If the problem is in a rear tire, you might not feel much in the steering wheel.
Look around the edges of your wheels to see if there's any evidence a balancing weight might have been thrown off recently.
