vibration only when towing

New 2016 F250 6.2 and did my first tow of a light 16’ Alumboat. Between about 40-50 mph the truck really vibrated but when not towing there is no vibration. Hooked up the boat to my SUV and no vibration.

Any thoughts?

If it does it every time, I would just swing by Ford with the boat hooked up and take the service manager for a ride. It sould not have any vibration at all!
Good luck with it!

I'm not sure the dealer will be any help if it doesn't vibrate without the trailer.
Different wheelbase lengths can change the harmonics when driving.

For example, here in L.A., the concrete freeways create a bounce in my truck with the long wheelbase that my car doesn't even notice.

You might have just enough an an effect from the truck and trailer combo, that the SUV doesn't have? Does it happen regardless of road conditions?

You might check your hitch assembly bolts. When a recall came out on my Expy years ago, I checked the bolts that connected the hitch to the frame and they were all loose. Not good.

Hi -dave-,

As Don suggested, I'd get this in front of your dealership. If possible, have the boat hooked up so the tech can experience the vibration. How many miles are on it?

Truck only has about 150 miles. Brand New. Trouble is that the boat is now put away for the season - towed to the lot.

do you have 300-500 lbs you could throw in the bed (at the very rear of the bed) and see if it still vibrates?

Hi -dave-,

Thanks for following up. If you'd like, you can hold off on having this addressed until you tow again; since your dealer will want to replicate the vibration, that may be a good idea. When you're ready to head in for diagnosis, PM me your details (full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership); I'll escalate you to the customer service manager for your region.

Oh, sorry but I didn't realize that you were with ford. I'm going to try towing with my other trailer / atv to see if I can replicate it. Thanks!

Hummm Id also rule out the tires, rims and wheel bearings on the trailer before turning my focus on the truck. You need to split the dictionary here...trailer or truck... its trailer first. The trailer is the logical root cause path to start with. Rule out the trailer then look at the truck.
