I have an early '99 F-250 with manual locking hubs. When the hub is locked it rattles a little and there is no vibration. But when I unlock the hub it rattles alot and there is a vibration. The vibration comes and goes. Is the hud bad or is it a bearing? What should my fix be?
Raise the wheel off the ground and check for slack in the the hub bearings by wiggling the wheel. If there is any slack(or roughness when turning the wheel), the hub is in need of replacement. If this all checks out, remove the locking hub and check for worn parts.
I had the same symptoms in my early 99. Slide up under the front end and grab the axle shaft just before it goes into the wheel. See if you have alot of movement up and down. If the axle bearing goes bad and cuts the shaft, it will cause a terrible vibration without the hubs locked, and much less vibration when locked. I had to replace both sides.
I am confused???? Mueckster had you check the wheel bearings and I had you check the axle bearing (two different systems). Which one did you find movement in? The hub bearings should have about a 1/16" movement in and out on the top and bottom. The axle shaft should not have hardly any movement up/down.
