The "Check Engine" light on my '95 Explorer XLT keeps coming on after a few miles of driving. I tripped the code (with a wire jumper, Key On Engine OFF) and it flashed a sequence indicating "332".
According to the Haynes manual, "332" means "EGR Valve Opening Not Detected"... BUT, it also states that the "test conditions" are "C, R" (Continuous Memory, Engine Running). Does this mean that my Key ON Engine OFF results are inaccurate?
Also, aside from the valve NOT opening, what else might cause the PCM's failure to detect it?
First thing I would check is the egr valve. If you have a hand held vacume pump, disconnect the vacume line from the egr valve and hook up your vacume pump to the egr valve. Start the engine, actuate the egr valve with the vacume pump. The engine should stall or nearly stall. If this happens the egr valve is good. If the idle does not change the egr valve is bad or the egr ports are clogged. If your idle did drop when the egr valve was actuated I am 90% sure the dpfe sensor is bad. I have changed a lot of them.
Does this mean that my Key ON Engine OFF results are inaccurate?
No, this means that you need to review your instructions for the KOEO test until you know how to distinguish KOEO codes from CM codes. Both sets are output during the KOEO test.
Assuming that you have a CM 332, and that it passed the KOEO test (you got 111 for the KOEO codes), the next thing to do, if you go "by the book" is to run the KOER test and resolve those codes until you get a pass code before dealing with any CM codes.
It seems that most of the time an EGR code is a result of a fault in the PFE/DPFE sensor/circuit rather than the EGR valve itself.
This forum is AWESOME! I got more useful tips from the two replies posted here than I ever got from the local Ford dealer!
I really appreciate the help because I'm currently laid-off and cannot afford to have somebody else fix the problem. Thank you!
