Hi. New to the forum but not to Ford trucks. I've owned at least 6 different Fords (and 1 Dodge) in the past 18 years. I recently sold a '79 Ford F250, and just yesterday bought a '97 F250 "Heavy Duty". The '79 model made no reference to "Super Duty" or "Heavy Duty", and all late model F250's seem to be "Super Duty", so my question is what makes a Super Duty a Super Duty, and how is it different from my "Heavy Duty"?
quick and dirty is you have a beefed up suspension, axles, etc on a 150 body. I believe it's in the FAQ. 99 is the first year I believe that Super Duties appeared.
Ford started the super duty line in 99 and it continue's.. Its just there way of labeling the F250 and up...I think ford called something super duty in the 80's or 90's also.

The F250 HD is basically the old version of the current F250 SuperDuty. The old F250 LD is basically the higher GVWR package in the current F150.
The body styling is the same, but it is a much larger truck both inside and out. The F250 HD is not the same body as the F150 in that year, so it's not accurate to call is a beefed up F150. Check out the grill on the F250 and F150, that's the most noticable place to see that the F250 HD is larger than the F150.

My bad I guess from only seeing them from a distance couldn't really tell. I did notice however that the axles were different. Reg 150's had a 5 bolt pattern and the HD had a 7 bolt pattern. Thanks for setting me straight Johnsdielsel.
Didn't ford have a f250 and a f250 super duty (Light and a super duty versions)? I remember seeing a few out there and the f250 is just a beefed up f150 and then the super is a hole nother beast.

You're right. The F250 HD has an 8 lug axle. The 7-lug was for the light duty F250.

The former F250 light duty is a beefed up version of the F150. That's why it's now offered in the form of a heavier GVWR on the F150. The F250 HD is a different truck all together. My 1997 F250 HD has the same GVWR and GCWR as the 1999-2004 Super Duty F250s. Ford did away with the HD designation since there is now only one F250 available. They used to call the medium duty+ trucks Super Duties, but now that refers to the F250-750.
Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to pick up my '97 Heavy Duty this morning after having made the deal for it on Thursday. It may have its first chance to shine next weekend, as we are planning to pull our 31' Mallard travel trailer to Pipestem State Park in WV next Friday.
