ive got a intermitten knocking sound on my wifes 01 F350 it does it soo randomly, seems to more after a hot start. dosnt affect power, does it when in gear and in park, ac on and off. also i noticed the belt tensioner seems to shake quite a bit dosnt move like that on my 97. its got fresh oil in it and its right where its supposed to be. also dosnt sound like a rod knockin, is this the ford cackle that ive heard of?? truck is totally stock except for the muffler delete. also cant find anything loose, about to put a new belt on it and possibly a tensioner, im thinkin its the tensioner going bad.....but i dont have clue

I have the same sound on mine. That is what got me started on the Hutch mod and redesigning the fuel supply to the cylinder heads on my truck to eliminate the air from the fuel supply. It did nothing for the knock. It still comes and goes. I even replaced both injector wiring harness's and valve cover gaskets because I found a burned wire connector. The knock still persists. It comes and goes. It will go from a perfect idle to souning like somebody is tapping on the side of the block with a tiny hammer. Adding Stanadyne Perfomance Formula or Diesel Clean dramatically reduces the noise. Also I have noticed, and only when the engine is cold, it will have a perfectly smooth idle, no knock or miss. Give it just enought throttle to bring the rpm up to 1100 rpm and the engine will rock like the injector spray pattern is not quite right. It doesn't miss or knock while doing that, just acting like that one cylinder is not contributing 100%.
Now before you think that I did all this work in vain, that is not the case. When I first purchased this truck used about 3 months ago, the engine sounded like a very bad set of lifters on the left side during warmup. I have since learned that noise was the injectors trying to fire with air in the fuel. I did the Hutch mod to remove the air from the fuel supply and that sound immediatly went away. With all the work that I did lately, I cannot point to one of them and say: "That was it." It was all of them combined that brought about the most improvement to the way my engine sounds. So I am very glad that I did the work.
When I started out I was full of questions and the good people on this forum were very knowledgeable and helpful. Here is a list of threads that I started before I did the work. I wanted to make sure that I didn't screw up my nice (new to me) truck. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=278697 https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=260173 https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=266162 https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=277571
