A while back I replaced my PCV with a Napa one . It was due for replacing and the 4.O was using a little oil. The two local parts places did not have Motor Craft and I was to lazy to drive 25 miles to the big city. Put the Napa one on & no change, still used oil and got worse. Went and got a Motor Craft one, put it on and the oil consumption went from 500 miles to a quart to over 1600 miles & still not low enough to add one.
NAPA has gone to the two-tiered approach that many businesses have: you can buy "consumer grade" and "professional grade" products from them. The NAPA "Silver Line" is the cheap stuff. Filters all seem to come in a "Silver" line and "Gold" line, as do some brake parts.
I've been buying parts from NAPA for about 25 years, and I used to buy some of their tools too ("New Britain") until the quality on their house-brand tools got so poor I had to give up, but I'm also not very pleased with the new starter drive I bought from them last fall -- instead of coming in a "Balkamp" or "Echlin" box, it was a white box, very generic looking, like something I'd buy at Autozone or Schucks. I installed it anyway, and it's much noiser on overrun than the one it replaced. I used to be able to trust NAPA-sourced parts 100%, but not any more.
These days, I shop OEM a lot more than aftermarket; surprisingly, sometimes the price is quite reasonable, and the fit is almost always better.
(My local dealer didn't have a distributor cap or rotor in stock for a DOHC 1.8l Escort engine. Sheesh!)
