Proper code reader
I own a Ford 2000 Ranger 3.0 Liter, and my check engine light just came on. I suspect something trivial has failed as the truck runs just fine. Now I want to go ahead and purchase a code reader, but when I asked a local parts store (NAPA) I was told that the reader would cost $2800 dollars and I should just take the truck to the dealer. Obviously something was misunderstood here, but it makes me wonder if the ODB II readers I find online would be what I need to pull codes? Would this same code reader work for my 2000 Honda?
Can someone point me to a good explanation about the whole code reader deal so that I don't go out and spend $200 bucks on a nice reader that won't work for me?

and I suppose maybe it would be a good idea to sticky this one so that other amateurs like myself can get with the current trend.
Why would NAPA be so behind the times with the readers? Seems like a potential market they are missing out of.
