Code Readers
I am interested in purchasing a code reader to helpe diagnose problems with my '04 Expedition XLT. Can you recommend any good code readers and does Ford use the "CAN" protocol on their new trucks and SUVs? I've investigated a couple of code readers and some don't work if "CAN" protocol is being used on your vehicle.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Inexpensive code readers are available for as little as $65 at WalMart that will read codes, reset codes, check OBDII readiness monitors, and not much more.
A decent, capable scanner that can also display freeze frame and real-time data and manufacturer-specific codes will run $300-400. If you want to be able to read supplemental systems (ABS, SRS, etc), prices run from $700-2500.
If you have an available laptop, interfaces with software start around $125-150 and go up from there.

2) IF you insist on spending the money on a code reader, why not get a programmer ? 99% of the good programmers have built in code readers.... then you get the benefit of more "efficient" power
