I read lots of pages here looking for an inexpensive code reader. I finally called Mactools and told them my vehicle and what I need and they told me what code reader would work. It works to read and reset trouble codes.
Mactools model MAC ET75, ebay had it for just shy of $80 shipped.
The check engine light was on, so it was either buy a code reader or pay someone to check it. It read my 2 codes and reset them.
Which codes if you don't mind me asking. I'm curious if it was a general truck code or diesel specific.
Also, what other vehicles will it work on? Can it read the Dodge & Chevy diesel codes too? I'm almost scared to ask, but how long have they had this product? Just wondering how long this has gone overlooked.
code was P1391 and P1393, the P1xxx is manufacturer specific the book says, but the cd told me what the code meant.
I installed the program and you put in vehicle information, ford, f250 1999 7.3, put in the codes and it tells you what they mean.
I can not say if it would read the other diesels or not. Most of my neighbors have fords, so will wait till thanksgiving when friends i will be with have other diesels and use it to check those.

Well reading glow plug codes sounds like it's talking the diesel language. If it were me, I'd unplug the ICP and then MAP sensor to see if you can read some additional codes, but I'm like that.
Now that you can read the codes, you'll need to know what to do about them. Bookmark these links
99 PC/ED manual go to section 4 and scroll down to the DTC section. It will give you the diagnostic tree to follow to fix the problem.
Then you can use the 99 Workshop Manual to figure out how to change the parts.
Sounds kind of like you've got a problem with your GPR.
Edit: Let us know how it works on other vehicles, including regular cars.
I really dont mean to hijack, but Ive been looking on motorcraft for my 2000 workshop manual and I think I might be blind and cant find it. Im sure I could basically use the 1999 that Chris posted but if you could point me in the right direction, Chris, I would really appreciate it!

What info exactly are you looking for? The codes he listed are only on the early bird models since they used a shunt on the GPR which the rest of us don't have.
That will give you the list of the 4 digit P codes and the diagnostic tree to follow. When you click on the link to go to the pinpoint test, you can usually scroll up to the top of that page and click on the "XX" Introduction which will take you back to a general description of how that sensor basically works.
Is this a common problem for the PSD's? Finding a code reader that works for the 7.3L'rs?
I have a Diablosport Predator handheld tuner, and a SCT X-Cal 2 handheld tuner. Both are used for uploading custom tunes to my Lightning and both are code readers. I've used them both to read DTC codes for my L, my daughters Escape, my '03 F150, and my Excursion with no problems at all. In fact, using the handheld tuners as code readers is how I diagnosed my problem earlier this year, fixing the problem with UVC clips from Ford.
