engine "rattle"

ever since I bought my '92 XLT new, 3.0, 5 spd (now with 115k miles), there has been a rattling type of noise in the engine especially during acceleration. Also, while idling it makes a kind of intermittent knocking type of sound (I always thought it may be the oil pump since I could relate it to nothing else). It almost sounds like a diesel engine only somewhat toned down. It has caused no problem that I'm aware of and I kind of liked the sound, but I have noticed on this forum that some people have been writing about a similar thing and calling it a wrist pin knock and/or piston slap and also have written that a TSB was put out about this. My question is, is what I have been hearing in my engine the same thing that is being discussed on this forum as the wrist pin knock or piston slap?

The wrist-pin issue is really a 4.0L OHV thing, I haven't really heard of it occuring on the 3.0L.

Are you sure you aren't hearing the infamous "spark knock" or "pinging"?

I Don't believe it's your garden variety pinging. It comes from a place deeper within the engine. I have some minor pinging now, and have had much worse pinging in the past and the rattle I described doesn't much sound like the same thing.

I don't know about the 3.0's , but the 4.0's of that vintage had bad lifters that would rattle until the engine was fully warm, and sometimes even then. It gave a diesel sound to it in the mornings.

No...this sound is noticeable when accelerating down a major thoroughfare, not so much at highway speeds, but in town driving on a 4 lane street with a speed limit of say 45-55 and when I step on it a little from about 40 to 50, it will give the subdued "dieseling" type of sound. Like I said, it has cause no known problems. Could it be the timing chain slapping around?
