Hi Guys -- First time post -- Just bought 04 xlt 4.0 man 4x4 super cab -- love it but have a question: first time start in morning ( weather can be either cold or warm ) the unit pulses or hesitates for the first mile or 2 & then runs like a top. I hate to have a mechanic monkey with it if this is a " normal " thing as it is getting almost 20mpg in the mountains. Thanks

Welcome, and congrats on the new truck!
Unless we are talking about a very cold morning, a brand new fuel-injected engine shouldn't really have to be warmed up before it starts operating without any stumble or hesitation. I would say it's not normal.

This wouldn't have anything to do with that rough sound that the timing chain in the 4.0 SOHC engines make on a cold start would it? Or did Ford finally fix that (not that it was actually a problem, hypothetically)?

'04 XLT...running rough at first. Time to take it back to the dealer, it's not going to fix itself and they owe you a vehicle in perfect running order. By the way.....20mpg? By hills, I assume you mean going back up the hills too. In the flat lands of Florida the best I can do is 18.3
