I'm thinkin a Cummins diesel would be the way to go. But that's just my opinion, i love diesels with straight pipes
hell yeah! that is hard to beat. i think the best sound in the world is a diesel with a turbo at the line spooling up and then letting loose. dam skippy
I do't like diesels, I don't know how to work on them. I don't know how to fix electronic control systems. I like Carverated gas engines. A 511 stroker would be my next choice.
I built the 390 to be ran hard. I would not worry about running it at 4000+rpm all day.
Maybe I will throw a 4.25" crank in it.That would help with torque. I am going to run some numbers and see what i come up with.
I ran some numbers through DD and got the following:
My 390 with a 4.25" crank and a roller cam:
280/280 at .598/.598 lift LCA 108/intake LCA 104
525lbs at 2000rpm 550lbs at 3000rpm stays flat until 5000rpm then dropsto 500 at it's redline of 6000rpm.
200hp at 2000 rpm 525hp at 5500rpmthen drops to 500hp at ints 6000rpm redline.
A cam, crank and pistons will be alot cheaper than a simular build of a 460.
Any opinions? Please be brutally honest this is important to my plans.
Thanks
Current status of plan:
92 F250HD Extended cab, Sterling 10.25 HD (full float), D60, 390 (396cid) 420hp 430tq, C6, np305 and 46" Michhellins on 20" double beadlock rims
I know it isn't the biggest or baddest but it is a start.
Hopeing to move up to a 460, np203 doubler, rockwells and 53 tires.
Any opinions?
WOW, what an interesting thread. There must not be any bumper height law's or frame height law's in California? I would think that 390 is gonna be giving it all it has got to get that truck going.
If the budget is no problem as stated why not build a new motor so you can go with the rockwell's and the 53" tire's from the start?
What a thread!!! Randy you said to be honest and so I say you need to figure out really what you want. I mean, you said you were not changing out your rebuilt 390 now it sounds like you are thinking about it. Just build a 460 nothing beats those look at all the hardcore guys on here they are all running 460s and there is a reason for that. Thats what I would do with your budget. You really need to figure out what axcles, tires, and engine you will be using and these guys can tell you how to do it from there. They can't tell you if you can't decide though or keep changing your mind. Good luck registering a 92 in Commifornia as a 76. Hope it all works out for you man.
I know I keep going back and forth but I am in the first stage of this project. It can go in so many different directions. I am having trouble deciding what to do. The 390 is staying. In what form is yet to be seen. I just wanted to know if the 445cid version of it I described above will do the job. Money is a factor. most of it is getting eaten up by the tires and rims. by the time I rebuild the axles I will be broke. At this time I don't have the money for a 460. I keep getting different opinions about the build from other people and sources. Just tring to decide what is the best way to go. Just do the drivetrain right the first time and build a 460 if the 390 doesn't cut it.
Thanks for putting up with my fickle plans.
