The Crew Cab is at the local junkyard. I haven't seen it yet but I am sure it is in pretty bad shape.
Boyce seems to have good prices on rebuilt axles: http://www.boyceequipment.com/
Randy, I'm not clear on what you are trying to do here. Are you going with 50+ inch tires like you stated in the first post or are you going 44's? 44's will be fine with a 60 front and 70 rear (a 60 rear would survive if you're not putting any real power to it). I just don't see how you're going to fit 53's with only 6" of lift. What plans do you have for suspension and are you planning to trailer this rig? I'm kind of seeing two completely different builds here.
Phew! Just woke up from being passed out. Did somebody mention somebodies wife!? Throw 'er at me! Unless she's a pig. Anyways, how did we go from 50+ tires to running a front dana 60!?!?!? I thought you were serious? Like I said, if you want to run a tire that size and you don't JUST want to look cool at the mall its all about the rockwells.
That's what I'm not getting, we're talking about 2 completely different rigs here . . . that's the topic at hand Pro, not wives. I'm also not clear on why you'd be concerned about a DOT approved tire if you're pulling your fenders and bed as your truck won't be street legal anyhow. If you go that route you'll be looking at trailering it everywhere. If you keep your bed (or build a flatbed) and fenders, trim the hell out of them, and get enough lift on there you can run 53" Mich's semi-legally on the road. But, that being the case, you'll need Rockies.
I want the biggest baddest off road truck that can still drive on the highway. Even if it is just to get to the local play areas. I would love the IROC'S and a set of rockwells but that may be to much. 44s may have to do.
The caIb has been moved back 8 inches. There isn't a bed. Nor will there be any front fenders. That shouldl take care of any tire/body inteference. I am not sure about front tire/frame interference. That was the reason for this thread. I don't know exactly what will work. How much lift do I need for the 49s? I would like to keep the CG low to the ground.
just wondering if your going with 50" tires I hope your just planning on mudding cause that tire and lift need and axle clarance wont do well on trails, just flat open areas
Since when will a mile of axle clearance not do well on a trail? Rockwell axles have awesome clearance as the pumpkin is a top loader. Go check out Pirate, there are plenty of guys running this combo in rock crawlers and trail rigs. I would actually say it would be more of a hinderence in mud because of the weight issue. It will take a TON of HP to keep those things spinning fast enough to clear in mud and the axles are extremely heavy so you'll sink in deep.
You can't drive what you described on the highway. Sorry. Techincally, my truck is the biggest and the baddest that you can drive on the highway, and thats by federal law. Most states are more restrictive and I couldn't even drive it there. You'll need to put those fenders back on and research your state laws to find out how big you can go in your state.
Randy, what is the reason for no front fenders? If you're talking about clearance why not trim 3" out of them? Are you planning to build a flat bed of some kind? Cali is a little more lax with their laws regarding stuff like this but no fenders and no bed will never fly if you plan on taking it on the road. You don't have to follow every letter of the law but that's going to get impounded right about the time you leave your driveway.
Honestly, if you're planning on running 44's and you want it to be the "biggest baddest off road truck that can still drive on the highway" you'd be best to build the exact same drivetrain you see in Pro's signature.
There are huys here running 44's and skyhigh lifts. My cousin has a F250 so high the floor of the cab is chest high. You literally have to climb in it.Sheet metal bedsides and heavyly modified front fenders will have to do then.
It's not the 44's that are the problem. You have to be aware of your state's adminitrative codes regarding things like bumper height (some states don't care), headlight height (54" is the national limit), mud flaps, fender flares, alterations to suspension, etc. I may be wrong here but I believe CA has a rocker height limit too. I'm far too tired and lit to read up on the codes down there but put some time into it. Lots of people run trucks that aren't legal but when you drive something that big it DOES get noticed and you will get hassled, ticketed, and maybe even impounded for it. To say "he's running a big truck so I can" is like saying you know someone who got away with robery so why can't you? Otherwise trailer it and go to town on the fenders.
If you don't believe me ask the blind guy what happens when he tries to visit Washington.
Pro go back to bed.
I am interested in learning. Not your B.S.
After all the stuff here and what i have learned elswhere I am not really interested in Rockwells. Too heavy and power robbing. If there is another lighter more efiecent axle that can handle 49-53 inch tires I want to hear about them.
Otherwise I am not sure what to do now.
