O.K. I have a 76 F150. I am going to build th e biggest baddest off road truck around here. Stricly for going any and eferywhere. Nothing pretty. Something I can beat up.
I want the biggest DOT approved tires I can buy, 50"+.
Starting with a blank slate:
what axles?
9in rear axle?
Rockwells?
np205?
C6?
What combo will handle some serious off road abuse.
What tires should I use for sand, rocks and deep sticky mud?
The only pavement it will see is the road from my house to the beach and river bar.
Okay, first off I can tell you don't have the first clue as to what you are asking about. Namely, mentioning the 9" with the dueces in the same breath. But that aside, tell us your budget and we can steer you from there. By the way, I don't think there are any dot approved 50+ tires, aside from maybe a mich.
Gee Thanks for insulting me right off. The only reason I mentioned the 9" is because that is what I have now. I can get pretty strong components for it. It is the axle of choice for grag racers after all.
Don't worry about the budget, but please keep it reasonable.

Always a pleasure Now, answer my question if your serious.
edit: Wow, nice edit. All your original post said was thanks for insulting you. Anyways, I still need a budget if you want pertinent advice grasshopper.

Other than military surplus Michelins, I think the biggest is the Irok 49". I don't know how well it does in the sand, pretty agressive tread. but wide, so it has good floatation. If you are running something that big, I think you need rockwells. I think a big diesel would be awesome. Dare I say Cummins 600?
sell your 76 F150 and buy a 79 F350 with a 460, c6, np205, dana 60 kingpinned axle, and dana 70 rear. 4" lift, 42" Super Swamper's on 16.5 beadlock rims, double the transfercase with an np203 and you would be good to go.
9" rear has a huge pinion gear which is why race guys love them, they'll handle the high HP well but they will not handle a 50+ inch tire. Even 1 ton running gear would have a tough time with it. You're going to want to run Rockwells and of course you'll want them locked (and disc brakes if you plan for the rig to be streetable) so figure $3,000 for the front and about $2500 for the rear. You will have to add about $500 or so for shipping all depending on where you live. 4 link would be ideal and depending on your skills you may be able to design and build it yourself for only a few hundred $$ worth of material. The shocks will cost some bucks though. Definitely stick with a gear driven transfer case to turn those tires, 205 would be good or a 203/205 double kit. I'm assuming you'll want to stick a 460 or bigger under the hood to keep things moving.
460 slightly built for reliability - RV cam - Edelbrock Performer Intake - Holley Truck Avenger carb - Fuel Injection if money inclines - Headers - good mufflers such as Magnaflow, Flowmaster, etc
If you decide against rockwells a Dana 70 or 10.25 rear axle - Dana 60 Front and limit yourself to 44" tires, although they can handle more tire if built properly, this might keep you from breakin shtuff. Detroit Locker Rear - ARB Front or Detroit....
Man I wish I had 10 g's to spend on my project, I'd be done and have money left over!
I'm guessing he doesn't have th skillz so he'll have to source out so he'll hav eto spend more than 10k betweent the drivetrain the engine that will make it a BEAST.
