I recently had to remove and rebuild the steering column (automatic transmission) in my 72 F100, and ever since I have been experiencing an odd problem. My truck no longer starts simply by turning the key. I now have to put the key in the on position, then push the shift leverto the left. This starts the truck. I don't really have a problem with this trick ignition in general, but it makes me a little nuts that something isn't working correctly. Anyone have any ideas.
Interesting! Sounds like the neutral safety switch is not hooked up right plus it's out of adjustment too. I don't have any wiring diagrams right here but I believe that the power for the starter solenoid comes from the ignition switch and goes thru the neutral safety switch and then to the solenoid. But the power should only come on when in the start position. Sounds like your neutral safety switch has the power on it all the time. Or maybe your ignition switch is doing it. Question: what happens when your engine is already running and you push the shift lever to the left? Does it try to restart itself even though it's already running?
Yeah, it does. I have to be careful when shifting from, as any time I go through N or P, it tries to start - even when running. To avoid this - mainly when parking - I've just been turning the key to off, then shifting into park.
Your neutral safety switch has power on it all the time. So when you hit the park and neutral positions it completes the circuit and tries to start the engine. Sorry I don't have any wiring diagrams here so I can't tell you any deeper what wire colors to look for.
you have 2 of the wires crossed on the neutral saftey switch. the 2 red with bluestripe wires should go on 2 blades side by side. you have the power for the backup lites starting the truck. try swapping a couple of wires around and see what happens.
Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out this evening. One more question. What is the best way to make your suggested change? Will I need to pull the steering column again, or can I get to the wires an easier way?
